KFL Week 1 Recap
The Kayak Fishing League expanded its team roster, roughly doubling its size to a total of 28 teams for the 2022 season. Those 28 teams represent over 20 states and the District of Columbia, giving the league an increased geographic presence. 26 of the 28 teams competed in week 1 of the 2022 KFL season. Favorites were upset in some cases, and home teams lost events while some huge fish and big limits were caught along the way in what turned out to be a raging start to the new season.
About the KFL
Each KFL team consists of 8 anglers. 4 anglers from each team compete in a tournament “game” against another team of 4. Each team competes in 4 home games and 4 away games every season, as the KFL schedule expanded from 6 to 8 games in 2022. KFL teams are divided into 2 conferences (South and North) containing 3 divisions each. The teams with the best records after 8 games advance to the playoffs where they compete for substantial purses.
In the team format, a team’s 10 longest fish are measured against the other team’s 10 longest. The team with the longest 10 fish limit wins the game. Individual anglers are also tracked in the standings to determine KFL Angler of the Year as well as a KFL fantasy league that awards points to each competitor.
Week 1 Results
With the exception of the southernmost states that experienced some stormy weather, most of the country faced clear fishing conditions, with overcast or sunny skies and light, variable winds. As a result, all 13 games were played. There were several notable results.
- The closest finish was in the game between the Motor City Ambassadors and the Washington Warhawks, which the Ambassadors won by a length of 169” to 167.25”.
- The largest margin of victory belonged to the Coosa Kingfishers, who prevailed over the Sunshine State Swamp Donkeys by nearly 120”, with the final score of 183.25” to 64.5”.
- Three of the week’s five longest limits were caught in the southern division, while two were from the northeast (Main-E-Yaks and Delaware Doom)
- The week’s longest team limit belonged to the Florida Copperheads, who had 204.25”
- The week’s top angler was Florida’s John Fuchs, who landed 192.25” in the Copperheads’ win.
